Altered Books
Instructor: Susan DeGarmo
Session Three: Grades 1-5
Make altered art by transforming books using an assortment of techniques s to create fun projects.  Students will learn how to add pockets; cut niches, windows, and doors.  By using a variety of creative techniques and popular mediums, students will create art-objects that take an ordinary book and gives it a new look and purpose.  Books can be turned into extraordinary conversation pieces or designed with a person or theme in mind.

Artful Architect: Model Making

Sessions Two and Four: Grades 6-12

Students will learn how to use various materials and tools as they build their own 3-D architectural model while exploring different surface materials and learning about scale, balance and proportion.  Skills learned in this class will be fun and helpful for their future school projects!

Behind The Scenes: Set Design

Sessions Two and Four:  Grades 6-12
Students will get to experience the words on a page come to life on a stage as they explore and learn about the elements of design. They will break down a play script and develop a functional set design building and painting set pieces and props. Faux finishing, texture, and layout will be the focus of this studio. 

Creature Creation
Instructor: Dale Crawford
Sessions One and Two: Grades 1-5 and 6-12
This course will focus on the creation of creature concept illustration for the genres of fantasy and science fiction. Students will develop an original creature design through the use of inspiration, research, and anatomical study. Final illustrations will then be executed through a combination of traditional drawing media and digital techniques through the use of Adobe Photoshop. Class will consist of a combination of presentation, demonstration, and class work time with a focus on individual instruction.

Cutout Animation

Session Two: Grades 6-12
Learn to create fun animations with the simplicity of cut paper, fabric and photos. The earliest animated feature films used this literal form of "motion picture". Monty Python's Flying Circus used this technique for its animated sequences in the 1970s, and it has become popular once again due to the computer-generated cutout animation style of South Park.

Drawing and Painting

Sessions One, Two, Three, and Four: Grades 1-5 and 6-12
Great paintings begin as great drawings. In this workshop, students explore drawing and painting from realism to non-objective works. They capture the likeness of a still life by learning how to see and draw details. Students then take their images and express themselves through color and design. Fashion and Recycled Jewerly

Sessions One, Two, and Three: Grades 1-5 and 6-12
Explore jewelry design while imagining a personal jewelry line. Develop a brand while learning basic jewelry techniques. Take those ideas to the next level by creating handmade jewelry pieces from recycled materials.  Learn tricks to assemble personalized pieces such as pendants, beads, necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and more. In addition, students will create a look book of their designs that includes resources about supplies, tips, and techniques that will bring all designs to life. Fashion Embellishment Techniques

Sessions Two and Four: Grades 6-12
15 hours of advanced mini fashion camp. Embellishment techniques make fashion into art. They are the twists and turns of fabric that attracts our eye to the product and make it stand out from the rest. Over 120 techniques may be taught in design school and we will experiment with 8-10 of these including: roses, starfish flowers, ruching, dip-dying, hand-painted, woven fabric, ruffles, origami folds, and handkerchief tears. The end result should be 3-4 couture dresses that incorporate these techniques as decided on by each class in color and category. Each dress will be custom fit and designed to be awarded to a lucky class member. All of our hands will create the garment and everyone will benefit from the learning, sewing and results of paper to dress model designing.

Fashion Illustration

Students will learn the basic techniques for fashion illustration using stylized fashion croquies as a base to draw from, they will learn proportion, sketching, shading and general techniques for applying garments to drawings as they would look and behave in actual life wear.

Intro to Architectural Drawings

Session Two: Grades 6-12

Great buildings start with great drawings! Learn the basics of hand drafting architectural drawings such as are used to construct buildings all around us. This course will focus on learning how to use the tools of the architectural trade to complete a set of drawings.

Intro to Interior Design
Instructor: Kim Zimmer
Sessions Two and Four: Grades 6-12

This course is a hands-on introduction to the exciting field of interior design.  Students will learn about the history of the design profession, through exposure to the work of famous designers and architects throughout the world.  Each student will select a room to design during the week, and will learn the processes and techniques used by an interior designer to create a design plan.  Students will learn about site measuring, scaled drawings, plan sets, sketching and drafting techniques.  They will also develop a concept for their room, then research and specify furnishings, fabrics, floor and window coverings, lighting and accessories for their spaces, and develop a presentation board that illustrates their design plan. 

Junior Fashionista (Intro to Fashion)

Sessions One and Three: Grades 1-5
15 hours of fashion training A-Z concentrating on current and classic clothing, classic and new designers, fashion theory and cycles, the NYC vs. the European market, fashion magazines, photo shoots, stylist work, runway shows, simple cut concepts like sweetheart and boat neck, basic color theory, basic apparel fabrics, home dying a pre-purchased but then embellished tank that will coordinate to a skirt that is sewn on elastic waistband and designed to match the shirt. Everyone leaves with a summer outfit, some sketches, and new knowledge about the world of fashion. We will view magazines, runway shows and other sources to form a recognition of famous designers and learn about the world of fashion in Nashville and the surrounding area as well.

Mini Me Fashion
Instructor: Jenny Kemala
Session Four: Grades 6-12
Students will construct a purse and a half-scaled garment with hand embroidery designs. They will learn how to create paper patterns of several garment designs from manipulating half-scaled patterns, cut fabric by using the patterns, hand/machine stitch a half-scaled garment, create samples using hand embroidery techniques, add embroidery designs on the garment, and attach the paper patterns and embroidery samples onto a sample book. They will make a small purse with buttons or a zipper using pre-selected fabrics and patterns.  All projects will be completed and presented by students on the last day of class.

Mixed Media

Creating spectacular artwork may reach beyond pencil and paint. Learn how to make layered treasures with collage of fabric, magazines, wire, photographs, buttons, and old jewelry. The possibilities are endless.

Paper Clothes For Your Doll
Instructor: Anita White
Session One: 1-5
Student will build clothing for their favorite doll using a variety of paper.  This will give the students the basics to using 3-D in fashion.  Together we will make an array of paper based clothing for your doll, complete with form, function, and fun.

Paper Play

Sessions One and Three: Grades 1-5
Using paper, students will build their own character!  They will use a paper toy theme by cutting the figure of card stock and building the costumes onto paper to make it interchangeable.  From comic book super heroes to fashion models on the runway, this class has something for everyone!

Portrait Drawing

Session Four: Grades 6-12
Drawings and paintings of people capture moments in time just like a photograph. In this course, students will learn facial proportion as they draw several realistic portraits of themselves and others. Students will then learn how to abstract their drawings into portrait paintings that express their own personal meaning and style through color, shape, and texture.

Portrait Play

Sessions One and Three: Grades 1-5
In this course, students will learn the basics of facial proportion while drawing a realistic portrait.  We will then explore many different ways to create a portrait through painting, collage, printing, cartooning, and more.  Students will learn all about portraits while working with several different materials.  

Puppet Making

Sessions One and Three: Grades 1-5
Found objects, paper-Mache, collage, fabric - anything can be made into a puppet!  We will explore several styles and then put your unique creations to use.  The class will culminate in a showcase performance at the end of the week.

Storyboard Presentation for Fashion Design

Session Two: Grades 6-12
Students will learn how to use an inspirational image and pull out colors, shapes, etc. to utilize in fashion illustration.  They will use these items to complete a "storyboard" along with fabric swatches and illustrations of garments.

Watercolor Techniques

Session Four: Grades 6-12
Learn to relax and let the paint flow in this introductory watercolor class.  Students will learn a variety of traditional paint applications.  Subjects will range from abstract to realistic.
