Fine Arts Course Listing

ART 1102 Design Fundamentals I (3)
Fundamental experience in 2-dimensional design, with an emphasis on the elements and principles of design, creative development, and media skills training. Lessons are reinforced with exercises to help students apply the different design concepts.
Prerequisite: None

ART 1103 Design Fundamentals II (3)
Fundamental experience in 3-dimensional design, with an emphasis on the elements and principles of design, creative development, and media skills training. Lessons are reinforced with exercises to help students apply the different design concepts.
Prerequisite: ART 1102

ART 1104 Color Theory and Application (2)
Fundamental exercises exploring the use of color, application, and theory. Emphasis will be placed on visualization and communication processes as they relate to the design field. This is a seminar/studio classroom structure.
Prerequisite: ART 1102

ART 1110 Basic Drawing (3)
This course is an introduction to the fundamental skills of drawing. Basic concepts are taught to facilitate accurate representation of subjects. Exploration of the drawing process, various media, and individual development are stressed. The goal is to develop the skills to accurately interpret subject matter. The are elements are used to develop composition, and critique sessions provide students with a foundation knowledge of art terminology.

ART 2110 Drawing II (3)
An introduction to the study of the human figure with an emphasis on construction, gesture, proportion, composition, and accurate representation of the human form using various media.
Prerequisite: ART 1110

ART 2115 Sculpture (3)
This course is an introduction to fine art sculpture with an emphasis on form and technique. A variety of working methods are employed to allow students to explore the physicality of the media and personal creativity. Development of technical process and critique skills is stressed.
Prerequisite: ART 1103

ART 2120 Painting (3)
A studio exploration of acrylic and/or oil painting techniques and their application to color and design principles and problems, including work with opaque and transparent effects.
Prerequisite: ART 1110

ART 2140 Photography (3)
This course has a discussion/workshop format. Emphasis is on what a designer needs to know to use photography effectively in a design career. This course involves working with personal photographic equipment.
Prerequisite: None

ART 3111 Thematic Development Drawing (3)
An advanced drawing course in which students develop and explore self-directed serial imagery and examine their work in both an historical and contemporary critical context.
Prerequisites: ART 2110 and 2120

ART 3120 Advanced Painting (3)
A continuation of ART 2120 with an emphasis on individual problems, the organization of ideas, and self-assessment. Intermediate studio experiences for painters exploring content and contemporary and traditional techniques.
Prerequisite: ART 2120

ART 3140 Darkroom Techniques (3)
A continuation of ART 2140 with a broader use of photographic materials, non-silver processes, transfers, mixed photo-media, and other alternative processes.
Prerequisite: ART 2140

DES 3321 History of Textiles (2)
An overview of textiles, textile designs, and symbolic motifs utilized by various cultures from ancient times to modern day. The socioeconomic, as well as historical, perspective as it relates to motif design in costumes and architecture will be an essential link to understanding textile history. Various historic textile techniques, such as lace making and felting, will be explored.
Prerequisites: ART 1102, 1103, and 1110, and FAS 1410 or ID 2810 or permission of the Chair

DES 3360 Introduction to Theater, Film, and Set Design (3)
An overview and historical background of set design for theater, film, and video. An exploration of fantasy design and an introduction to lighting and costume for theater and film. Students research and complete a 3-dimensional model of a set. Field trips are conducted to backstage production and construction areas.
Prerequisites: ART 1110, HIS 1601, and ID 1822

HIS 1600 History of Art, Architecture, and Design I (2)
A lecture-slide course making a general survey of the major periods of art and architecture from prehistoric times to the Renaissance. Emphasis will be on the historic development of architecture as related to culture and technology.
Prerequisite: None

HIS 1601 History of Art, Architecture, and Design II (2)
A lecture-slide course continuing a survey of the major periods of art and architecture from the Renaissance through the 19th century. Emphasis will be on the historic development of architecture and interiors as related to culture and technology.
Prerequisite: HIS 1600
